The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) conserves and manages our natural environment for the benefit of all Queenslanders. To ensure its long-term sustainability, DERMs’ tasks include promoting sustainable living and resource use, encouraging land managers and the rural industry to take an integrated approach to managing soil, water and vegetation, and strengthening our response to climate change.
Its key areas of responsibility are:

environmental services - building resilience in natural landscapes and conserving our natural and cultural heritage. |

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) forms part of the Department and is responsible for managing the State’s parks and forests. Visitor use of these areas is a critical component of the department’s work and is coordinated through the QPWS Tourism and Visitor Services Branch.
The Tourism and Visitor Services Branch oversees programs developed and delivered by QPWS regarding tourism, outdoor recreation, and associated visitor behaviour, management, safety. It also provides community information and education as well as marketing of parks and forests. The Branch is made up of three units – Tourism and Visitor Management Unit, Communication and Community Engagement Unit and Visitor Permits Unit.
The Tourism and Visitor Management Unit is the principle point of contact and coordination for external stakeholders in relation to tourism and recreation use of QPWS managed areas. Responsibilities related to outdoor recreation include:

 | development of policies for tourism and outdoor recreation on the protected area estate |  |
development and implementation of State-wide visitor management strategies and tools for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service staff managing protected areas |  |
provision of advice on the development of outdoor recreation activities and trends that affect protected areas |  |
provision of advice to peak State interdepartmental working committees concerned with the management of outdoor recreation |  |
development of State/Region level agreements and Memorandums of Understanding with peak bodies representing specific types of outdoor recreation |
